What is coaching?

Coaching is a process where I (the coach) think with you as you reflect on your life, changes you want to make, and goals you want to achieve in your current life phase. We do this through several coaching sessions that build upon each other.

My role is to listen to what you share with an open and non-judgmental attitude. One way I do this is by asking questions, which can help you discover reflections and solutions from within. I do not give advice or expertise.

Together, we will agree on some specific goals you want to work towards. You set one main goal for the coaching process (over several sessions). Then you will set some smaller goals related to the main goal for each coaching session we have. My job as a coach is to help you create and tailor your goals to your values and purpose.

I want to create a safe and open space where you can explore and think out loud, knowing that I will not share this information with anyone else.

I will support you and challenge you to grow. At the same time, the coaching process will be adapted to your needs and where you are in your journey. I will not push you beyond what you are comfortable with. However, I will challenge you to think outside the box of what you already know and are used to, so that new insights and solutions can emerge.

Next, we'll figure out how you can start achieving your goals in very practical ways. Real change happens when you move from thinking and reflecting to taking action.

You decide what you want to work on and how you want to do it, and I'll support you in that process.

We'll track your progress and make adjustments as needed to help you reach your goals. I'm here to support and motivate you throughout this journey.

I also believe that God is very central to the coaching process, as He is the One who gives you (and me as your coach) wisdom, insight, and the power to change. He has planted plans and thoughts within you, and He is the One who helps bring them to life. One of the ways He does this is through relationships where we can share ourselves with each other.

I want to do my best to tailor my approach to your comfort level and beliefs. You will determine the topics of conversation, whether we pray or not, and whether we discuss God or faith. Although I am a Christian, I will not impose my specific beliefs or values on you. I will be myself and remain true to my values, but I will respect your thoughts and decisions. I am committed to seeing your growth and progress regardless of who you are or what you believe.

Coaching usually works best when we meet for around 6 sessions, every other week, for about an hour each. It takes some time to get to know each other and build trust, which is really important for making progress. You can try out one session at a time, or commit to half or all of the sessions. We'll both sign a simple agreement to get started.

You are free to end the coaching process at any time, as long as you communicate this clearly. You can always book more than 6 sessions if you want, or come back for another round of coaching later. We can even schedule one-off sessions whenever you need a fresh perspective.

My ultimate goal as a coach is to empower you to become self-sufficient. I want to help you develop the confidence and skills to overcome challenges independently, utilizing the resources, support, and networks available to you. However, please don't hesitate to reach out if you need additional support at any point in your life. We all need a helping hand sometimes.

When is coaching useful?
Depending on your specific situation and needs, coaching might be a helpful approach for you if you recognize yourself in any of the following:
  • You're ready for a change in your life and are open to taking action.

  • You want to build new habits and routines.

  • Your life feels stagnant - you're stuck in a rut or encountering challenges that seem insurmountable.

  • You're experiencing a time of change as you move from one chapter of your life to the next.

  • You want to create a more sustainable work-life balance.

  • You want to explore your life, beliefs, and questions in a safe space, without judgment.

  • You want to move forward in life, make changes, explore your faith, or connect more deeply with God or a community, but you may feel uncertain and need time to do so at your own pace.

  • You're longing for a sense of wholeness, where your mind, body, spirit, and life circumstances are in harmony and balance.

  • You have faced disappointments, failures, and hurts in the past, but you are ready to move on with your life in a gentle manner.

  • You have tried other approaches, and you still feel stuck.

  • You desire to be a steady support for the people in your life, while simultaneously caring for your own needs and setting healthy limits.

  • You feel that your life is fairly good, but you still want to experience deeper growth and insights, or a clearer direction and purpose in life.

  • You wonder what life would be like "on the other side of fear": What if fear didn't hold you back?

  • You desire to hear God's voice more clearly, and to feel more confident in your ability to hear Him on your own.

  • You want to experience effective growth in your current roles: as a leader, parent, employee, business owner, stay-at-home parent, in ministry, etc.

  • You want to have deeper connections with others and live harmoniously with those around you.

  • You want to discover and develop your unique gifts and use them in a positive way.

  • You want to handle your circumstances and challenges with greater adaptability and resilience.

  • You sense a calling from God and want to move in that direction in a more focused way.

  • You long to understand more deeply who you are in Christ and to base your work and productivity on your connection with Jesus instead of solely on achievements.

  • You desire to be someone who stewards the life you've been given - someone who takes faith-based actions that lead to lasting results.

Coaching doesn't guarantee success, but it's worth a try!

Coaching compared to mentoring, therapy and discipleship.

Mentoring is often based on a personal or professional relationship. Mentors share their own personal experiences and insights to guide their mentee, where they have the role of advisor.
Mentoring
Psychotherapy deals with emotional, psychological, or behavioral issues. Therapists utilize specialized training and clinical methods to assist clients in overcoming difficulties and fostering health.
Psychotherapy
Discipleship is primarily focused on spiritual growth and involves teaching, prayer, and reinforcing specific beliefs and values. It often involves a spiritual leader and participation in a spiritual community.
Discipleship

The focus of coaching isn't just on results but on the individual transformation that occurs through taking action.

Coaching can overlap with other forms of guidance and support, but there are some differences.
Key aspects of coaching:
  • Coaching is primarily future-oriented. It focuses on how to specifically move forward towards a goal.

  • The topics in the coaching process are determined by the client, and the client decides which direction the conversation will take.
    The coach's job is to draw out reflections from the client (through questions and observations), help maintain focus on the main goal of the conversation, and guide it towards a practical action plan.

  • The client is responsible for their own decisions, actions, and results.

  • While setting and achieving goals is a key aspect of coaching, the process of achieving these goals is often more important than the results.
